Junior forward Bre Holmlund recorded her best offensive performance of the season on Tuesday night, helping propel the West Michigan Aviation Academy girls basketball team to an exciting 42-38 victory over Holland Black River.
Holmlund finished with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. She also pulled down four rebounds in an Alliance League contest that never saw more than an eight-point lead for either team.
Both teams went into the locker room knotted at 19-19 and little was resolved in the third quarter as the Aviators carried a 30-28 lead going into the final frame.
That’s where freshman Audrey Mileski made her presence felt. She scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, including three clutch free throws that would ice the game. She also had four steals.
Junior Sierra Greer anchored the Aviators at point guard all night, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Junior Grace McConnon added seven points of her own while senior Vixie Moore chipped in with six points and team-high seven rebounds.
Mileski, Moore and McConnon all battled foul trouble, but survived the game with four fouls apiece.
Becca Morin led all scorers with 14 points for the Rats (9-5, 2-3).
The win was WMAA’s first conference victory and the Aviators now sit at 1-2 in the Alliance League and 5-8 overall.
SENIOR NIGHT HONORS MOORE, WOODRUFF
Tuesday night’s game was Senior Night, honoring this year’s two seniors for WMAA. Both Vixie Moore and Katie Woodruff have been with the program for three years.
Both girls made the start in the victory.
